1. Casablanca - Here’s looking at you, kid.
In arguably one of the most poignant self-sacrificing moments in movie history, Bogie tells Bergman to take off with her on-the-run husband from the Nazis.Â
Â
2. Psycho - Mother, mother, in the Shower.
Alfred Hitchcock knew that fear is conjured not by blood and gore, but through timing and the ensuing suspence. The shower scene in Psycho, the name Norman Bates and Mother, are forever etched in movie-goers’ minds as one of the most thrilling moments.
3. The Godfather - Horsing around in bed.
The horse head looks real because it was real, fresh off a slaughterhouse in New Jersey, after Francis Coppola decided the props on set were not good enough. Apparently, the movie got more complaints for animal cruelty in this one scene than it did for the twenty something bodies that piled up in this three-hour mob saga.
4. On the Waterfront - I could’ve been a contender!
“I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it.”
5. Gone with the Wind - Frankly dear I don’t give a damn.
Three hours of epic war, romance, and deaths later, Rhett Butler utters one of the most quoted movie lines of all time despite Scarlett’s protests.
6. Singing in the Rain.
Tap dancing in the rain with boundless joviality.
7. China - She’s my sister, she’s my daughter.
Labelled a neo-noir movie, this 1974 movie with Jack Nicholson is as stylish as it is psychologically engaging. This movie led to Nicholson’s rise, and is remembered as Roman Polanski’s last movie made in the US.
8. Five Easy Pieces
None substitution at a restaurant is responded with such rage that future waitresses should take serious note.
9. Street Car Named Desire - Hey Stella!
Marlon Brando in a torn T-shirt beckoning his wife down from the balcony that ends with that embrace. That’s ALL.
10. Brief Encounter
I can almost recite the entire movie from watching (and listening) to it so many times. The dialogue, the score, the inner turmoil written on faces, is all too human. The ending too, shows that we live in a world of grey.
