So the Seinfeld/Gates ads were completely incomprehensible even when you’re stoned, and now Microsoft is banking on nostalgia to win the PR war with Mac (good luck with that). But since when did the 80s become retro? And is DOS really so ancient that it needs to be commemorated on a “retro-inspired” T-shirt? Is everyone conspiring to make me feel old!? Do kids nowadays even know what DOS is?
Twenty-first century cynicism aside, it is kind of sweetly reminiscent though. I still remember when I first played with computers in my dad’s office, before C and C++ came along, when languages of the day were DOS commands and FORTRAN. And years later, when we tried to write animation codes in high school computing classes using TUTOR, I was obsessed with getting the most members of the South Park crew run over by Kenny’s skateboard. Ah, good times.
Here’s Microsoft, trying to recoup bombed ads investment by selling T-shirts.Â
