And I’m going for the latter. Apparently some magazines have conveniently leaked out ads that spoof the NIKE tagline and sportswear, namely track suits. I’m convinced this is an inside job from NIKE itself. Let’s see:
1. Pop is coming back. In fact, pop, when tapped the right way, can avoid the cheesy and go mainstream/alternative. Look at American Apparel. Their ads are all about the pop. The headband, leotards, liquid leggins, etc.Â
2. Why would the track suit be associated with NIKE? Granted, track suits are sold by every major sports label, but when you think of track suits, isn’t Adidas be the first one that comes into mind? With their Missy Elliott and hip-hop connections? Because NIKE wants to carve out a niche for itself. And pop is not a bad place to go. Come on, where else is there, rock? Can NIKE possibly venture into the plaids/t-shirts/jeans business?
3. NIKE wants to get into your head. It’s hard to get people’s attention these days. People are fed up with advertising, especially when they are boring and predictable.  They probably hired an up and coming ad firm that specializes in social media marketing or something, and thinking it’s oh-so-clever, wanna get into our heads with this Napoleon Dynamite character or whatever it is here. I can just see them stroking their goatees and going all self-congratulatory on how they’re gonna reap the benefits of us identifying and loving this supposed douchebag and actually go out and buy those track suits and headbands as some kind of an in-joke.Â
High-five!Â
