Second day of Christmas: selling stuff, then and now

December 26, 2008

Today is Boxing Day in some parts of the world.  Retailers set rock bottom prices on so-called “door crashers” to attract shoppers.  Fearing for my personal safety, and more or less broke ass, I decide to take it easy.  So I went window shopping, online.

While checking out department store sales, I stumbled across some over-photoshopped advertising prints.  I pulled out some vintage ads I saw a while ago and put them side by side.  Pencil sketches are replaced with sophisticated cameras and photo editing sessions.  Real models replaced fictional characters.  And more importantly, retailers are now selling, what else, lifestyles and status instead of clothes.   Old versus new comparisons below.
